According to the Wall Street Journal, alleged threats against US officials stationed in the two European cities were first reported internally last summer to authorities at those posts and then to the State Department in Washington. The diplomats were among up to 200 others who contracted suspected Havana Syndrome while stationed in China, South America, and Europe.

Officials from the United States' diplomatic missions in Geneva and Paris are suspected of being affected by the mysterious anomalous health incident known as Havana Syndrome, with at least one being airlifted back to the United States for treatment. On January 13, Secretary of State Antony Blinken told the press that the US still doesn't know what Havana syndrome is and that the government is striving to solve the issue.

Havana syndrome first appeared in Cuba in 2016 and has since impacted a number of US diplomats, spies, officials, and family members, as well as a number of Canadian diplomatic personnel stationed there. Migraines, nausea, memory lapses, and dizziness are among the symptoms of the mysterious ailment. A piercing sound sometimes precede it.
